Australia scraps domestic Rugby Union

FostersThere's massive news piping from down under today. The Aussies are scrapping their domestic rugby competition altogether. According to The AFP The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) scrapped its new national domestic competition on Tuesday, because it racked up millions of dollars in losses.

The ARU said it was abandoning the Australian Rugby Championship because it had lost 4.7 million dollars (that's about £2million) in its very first year.

Continuing the competition "would be fiscally irresponsible," the union added, whilst wrestling a crocodile to the ground and then drinking a tinny.

The eight-team competition was touted as a way to revitalise the code in Australia when it was launched last year, with administrators envisaging it as a bridge between grassroots club rugby and the Super 14 provincial tournament. It however wasn't. It was a crock of crap.

The Rugby Union Players Association said it was disappointed with the decision because the players were overwhelmingly in favour of the competition and indications were that rugby supporters viewed it positively.
"We can't help but feel this decision is premature," said association chief executive Tony Dempsey, whilst re-corking his hat / running over a kangaroo. Eek.
