RESULT All Blacks 40-0 Scotland: New Zealand A Scrummage Scotland B to Death

Ali_haka

Full Time: NEW ZEALAND 40-0 SCOTLAND: If this was a handicap - Scotland B against a star-studded set of All Blacks - it would be a close call whether NZ really deserved to win. 6 tries, 40 points, overwhelming superiority up front against an unfancied side... all sounds a bit like a pom spectacular from 2003. Scrumbag's man of the match was Dave Callam - under 80 minutes of pressure, he managed to get himself on the front foot and stay there. On the AB side, give the pack their due and Tony Woodcock in particular - he outshone Hayman today with his work in the tight and the loose, and was unlucky to get a pass which was slightly forward, to miss out on a try. Great effort. All in all, let's hope that the Cardiff quarter-final shows a step-up in Kiwi ambition and execution. And if Scotland lose to Italy next weekend, it's their own fault for short-changing their public.

73min: ABs 40-0 Scotland TRY Howlett 2: The subs are doing well for NZ. Isaia "Ice Man" Toeava makes a strong line break and Andrew "Andrew" Hore takes it on to the last Scottish tackler before putting Dougie Howlett away for his 48th try in Black. OK. Silver. Dirty grey. Carter... you guessed it. Extras.

68min: A few stats. Scotland have coughed the ball up 13 times, but NZ have been very sloppy and turned it over 17 times. The Scots have missed 10 tackles to NZ's 2, but then again, they've had to make 105 to 71 made by the All Blacks. The Scots' line-out is also not going well - they've lost 3 out of 9. Crucially, NZ have carried for 640 metres against Scotland's 147 metres - the Scottish just haven't been on the attack, really.

64min: ABs 35-0 Scotland TRY Carter: But who needs to kick the goals if you can score the tries? Scotland do some good work to get within 40 metres of the NZ posts - some effort in itself - but make a mistake and Dan Carter glides away from cover to score under the posts. Thankless task for the Scots, fifth try for the All Blacks.

62min: ABs 28-0 Scotland TRY Williams: Sione Lauaki is on, Brendon Leonard on... and the ball is getting moved a bit more. Eventually, Ali Williams (the weird bloke with his tongue out, above) goes out wide right and shoots a telescopic arm out out to get the ball down well over the line. Question is: why the hell does it take a lock on the wing to get over? Carter misses the extras... again.

59min: NZ are just scrummaging today. Mike Kron must have them under orders... no backs moves, just a big push against some purple people. It's terribly boring. Scotland are getting a good warning from Marius Jonker, who must know very well that Scotland can't cope with the huge power flowing through the NZ front row. But they come away without conceding any points or yellow cards... the ABs have scored 3 points in 20 minutes, a very poor return. Unimpressed.

56min: ABs 23-0 Scotland PEN MISS Carter: Another penalty, another kick for Carter. Comes off the up-right, gathered by Howlett, goes left then right... to Woodcock in the corner. Blown up for a forward pass! No try! Mind you, Woodcock mullers tackler Southwell good and proper. Ouch.

54min: McAlister could be playing his way out of the 2nd 5/8 jersey here... Sivivatu busts through two tackles, offloads to the Punta del Jafa youngster and then the ball dies instead of being shifted on to Howlett, who has a clear run to the line. The force is not with Luke today.

47min: Dour stuff, as Masoe and Kelleher carry Callam back across his own line and then put the screws on at the 5 metre scrum. Scotland can't hold it up, there's too much power coming through Woodcock, Oliver and Hayman. Impressive - the crowd is probably expecting a champagne rugby from the ABs though! Scotland recover the loose ball though, and it's a Scottish put-in... best of luck with that...

43min: Lovely break from the restart by Luke McAlister. He might not be as reliable as Aaron Mauger, but he's a big munting bloke with tremendous balance. All breaks down again. Stop start game.

42min: ABs 23-0 Scotland PEN Carter: Still hating these kits. Dan Carter gets the ABs moving into the Scottish half and a floated pass right has the Scots scrambling and front row infringing, pulling Nick Evans back into the ruck. Pointless. Another 3 for Carter.

Half Time: NEW ZEALAND 20-0 SCOTLAND: NZ are in total control here, too strong for Scotland at the scrum, owning their line-out but crucially turning the ball over more than they'd like. Continuity is good with passes finding players in space, but ABs are tripping over Scottish players they don't need to. Less application, more inspiration in the second half will result in a lot more points. We'll say another 6 tries in the next 40... mind you, the kits are so similar that we won't know who the hell has the ball...

38min: Nick Evans with a beautiful break out of his own 22, hauled down. McCaw gets slippered out of a ruck and clutches his ribs - looks painful. Dave Callam isn't the big name in the Scottish back row, but he's having a great game. More messy play results in the whistle again.

35min: Jonker looking a bit outclassed by the NZ pack here. McCaw breaks off the scrum before the ball has gone, and then it's all a bit messy, the way the ABs like it.

32min: ABs 20-0 Scotland TRY Kelleher: Good continuity from New Zealand as Masoe makes inroads, Carter offloads from the deck and Carl Hayman rumbles close to the line - Kelleher uses all his class and experience to find his way over out wide while support runners keep the Scottish defence interested. Conversion goes wide - who cares?

30min: Oof! Close. Carter repeats his minute 2 cross-field chip and Sivi takes it this time, goes past one and then is taken by Southwell with 2 metres to go, offloads - but it's forward! Marcus di Rollo has taken Conrad Smith off the ball, too. Dangerous...

27min: Great moves down the left from Scotland with Callam, Southwell, Webster and Cusiter all to the fore. Richie McCaw is scrabbling around on the deck trying to slow it down, but there's too much pace on the ball. Superb scrambling from the ABs leaves Scotland with 5 metres to go and a realigned defence - knock-on ensues. Better!

24min: ABs 15-0 Scotland PEN Carter: Scotland putting themselves under unnecessary pressure, missing touch and trying to play too much rugby with the wrong players - prop Craig Brown - in the wrong areas of the pitch - their own 22. End up hanging onto the ball and Carter takes the 3.

20min: Couple of turnovers allow Scotland to threaten the NZ line before a knock-on - Scott Murray and John Barclay up for it. Leon MacDonald is struggling and Nick Evans comes on to replace him at 15. Chris Paterson - poor, poor kicking so far - is yanked after 20 mins by Hadden - looks like it could be a knock to the head as well. Not worth the risk, and on comes Dan Parks.

14min: ABs 12-0 Scotland TRY Howlett: Nice blindside move from a scrum with full back MacDonald coming into the line outside McAlister, feeding to Dougie Howlett for a clean dot-down. Breaks the record! ABs not looking great but doing the business at a point a minute. Cahdah! misses the extras. Scrum back on halfway as Paterson's restart goes dead. Ouch...

12min: These shirts (Scotland - mixed blue, ABs - mixed silver) are causing problems. Doug Howlett takes another quick throw-in and almost runs straight into John Barclay before realising that he's never seen him before in his life. Back to Black in the second half, boys. Chris Paterson looking nervous...

11min: Ali Williams, no! Quick throw in and Howlett and MacDonald pick the Scottish left wing apart before Ali knocks on under no pressure - chance missed!

9min: A few picks and drives from NZ across the field and Scotland are tackling well - McCaw gets wrapped up and flipped, there's some commitment from Scotland B. Chris Masoe knocks on to hand the ball back to Chris Paterson for a clearance - but the fly-half is under pretty much constant pressure, despite a slow start from the ABs.

7min: Pretty clear what Scotland are trying to do - kick the ball over NZ's defence to run on to it. Execution not great at the moment.

4min: ABs 7-0 Scotland TRY McCaw: That's the first one! From a scrum 5, So'oialo picks off the base and feeds inside to Richie McCaw, Cusiter too far across and Captain Fantastic strolls across for the points.

2min: Scotland try the pick and drive and get turned over on the AB 22 by Rodders - poor tactic - Ben Stiller throws it into the line-out, lost forward by Scotland. Dan Carter kicks cross-field for Sivi and he fluffs it with 15 yards to the Scottish try line!

0min: 68,000 people inside Murrayfield giving it a bit of Floooooooor of Scotland - a song which isn't about the English might work a bit better for today? NZ give it the haka, then Saffer Marius Jonker blows the whistle, Paterson kicking to the silver shirts.

15mins till KO: Afternoon all. This should have been one of the bigger games of the pool stages, but Scotland have decided to rest their pack for the Italy game in six days; Fitzy reckons that it could be a 50 to 70 point win for the ABs. No reason why not. Richie McCaw will fancy his chances at the breakdown against 20 year-old debutant John Barclay, and it's a full run for the New Zealand backs. Can't help feeling that Hadden's decision lacks common sense of letting his first team match themselves up against NZ, and it's definitely against the spirit of the tournament... Scotland aren't in any danger of recording their first win against this lot. Catch you in a bit for kick-off...

Couldn't agree wtih you more Jonny. The ABs were very disappointing. Coughing up the ball like that won't see them do much against the likes of France/Wallabies etc. However, I don't think that is giving credit to the Scots. Their defence was excellent - they really got into the faces of the New Zealanders (springbok style) and disrupted their game continuously. The ABs were their own worst enemy on lots of occasions and they'll need to improve - a lot, come quarterfinal time.

The best team in the tournament, versus a third rate Scottish XV. What an absolute shambles. Is this really what Rugby union has become?

And as for the organisational ability of the International Rugby Union.(or whoever has organised the tournament)2 teams with normally dark colored jerseys, the AB's can't wear their All-Blacks, so both teams turn up with almost the same colors and patterns. Unbelievable!!

No wonder the ref had such an appalling game, I hold him 90% responsible for a really terrible game, absolutely no control, I guess he could be colorblind and couldn't really tell who was who.

Surely we should be seeing the best rugby in the world. Well, this is hardly the case, and as for overall standard of the play, it is deplorable. Our heartlabd rugby here in NZ has got more going for it. Faster, more skillful, and exciting.

Surely this tournament will force the IRB to get organised and make the changes to the game that just may restore it to some of its former glory.
Or is this just wishful thinking?

Guy de Maupassant: we keep hearing from down south that rugby's shit, boring, etc. etc., and then that Air NZ Cup stuff (and lower) is faster, more exciting, better. But that's predicated solely on one view of the game, in one area of the world. The changes to the game you're talking about - the Stellenbosch laws - are just a representation of one side of one argument. Yesterday, the crime wasn't that rugby is shit and the ABs could only work with what the laws allowed them to do: it's that the ABs failed to take advantage of the massive advantage which their scrum gave them over Scotland, who competed well at the breakdown. If the points are on offer through moving the ball, move the ball.

As far as Rod MacQueen/ Paddy O'Brien's southern law reforms go, they won't guarantee better rugby either - just a style of rugby more homogenous to league. That might be what east coast Aussies and urban Kiwis want, to see more high-speed collisions, but it will come at a price of giving up what makes union union: real contest for the ball, not just a play-the-ball. Think on this: if Paddy O'Brien got his refs (1) reffing the ruck area according to the laws so that they didn't allow even a single hand to slow down the ball - not the 2 or 3 that are informally allowed presently - and players didn't come off their feet, or in from the side, and (2) really understanding the scrum so that they don't get screwed around by the packs, then ball would be faster, scrums would be easier on the eye and we wouldn't be needing a nuclear solution to a problem which could have been sorted out by the IRB reffing panel themselves. They're not earning their money, and they're cocking around with the soul of the game.

And it is a media have about the Air NZ Cup tournament. Like the New Zealand's national airline - it is very sub-standard and as about as interesting as watching paint dry.
